Shield (reflection), 2026

This is the latest in my series of shield drawings. This print is based on a pencil drawing that is slightly larger in scale in the original. Based on a shell, the sand dollar, that one can find on the beaches in Nova Scotia, Canada, it is reflecting on its nature of form. I built it in scale to the human body through drawing, making, remaking the form as a confrontational other. Cut out and printed on a rigid reflective background, I am toying with various associations. It is like an opening into the world that surrounds us, as well as the closing, as it becomes an object in space. During the encounter one gets lost in numerous associations. For me it is a reminder of the complexity in the small things that belong to our world. It is a reminder that we share our world with things unknown to us. It is a reminder to open up my mind to the other.
